Deep Space Station

Overview

Take a leap into outer space at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, a 45-minute drive from the heart of Canberra. Here you’ll discover NASA’s Deep Space Network, an international network of antennas that support interplanetary spacecraft missions.

The impressively sized antenna dishes at the complex send and receive data from spacecraft exploring the solar system and beyond. For a great view of the dishes, as well as an insightful exhibit about Australia’s role in space exploration, head to the Canberra Space Centre on the complex grounds.

Info

In Australia, the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) near Tidbinbilla, managed by CSIRO on behalf of NASA, is part of NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN), which communicates with space missions beyond Earth orbit.

While there’s no specific “Deep Space Station Act” in international law, space activities, including those related to deep space stations, are often governed by treaties like the Outer Space Treaty (1967), which provides principles on the peaceful exploration of space. Other countries with deep space facilities, like the United States and those in Europe, have their own regulations and agreements to support these operations and collaborate internationally.
